The UN's Complicity in Empowering Terrorism and Abandon the People: Arafat’s Expulsion from Lebanon
As Jordan and Lebanon expel the PLO for terrorists, the UN gives them a warm welcome!
Today, 41 years ago, on December 20, 1983, Yasser Arafat and 4,000 militants were expelled from Lebanon after years of destabilizing the country during the Lebanese Civil War. Arafat’s PLO had used Lebanon as a base for attacks on Israel, but their violence didn’t stop there. They also targeted Lebanese Christians and others who had no involvement in the Israel conflict, committing the same atrocities as Hamas on October 7th, it left tens of thousands dead. This violence played a key role in plunging Lebanon into further chaos and their violence was not about “oppression” it was not about “occupation” it was against their hosts, against the citizens who gave them a home.
This expulsion was not the first time Arafat and the PLO were forced to leave an Arab country, nor would it be the last. In 1970, Arafat and his militants were expelled from Jordan after the Black September conflict, where they attempted to take control of the country and destabilized it with violence.
Despite these expulsions and the terror they unleashed on both Israelis and Arabs, the United Nations continued to elevate Arafat and the PLO, granting them observer status in 1974. This allowed Arafat to speak at the UN and gain global legitimacy, even as his forces wreaked havoc on Arab nations. The UN would continue to provide Arafat and the PLO with a platform throughout the years, culminating in further emboldening and legitimizing their violent actions.
In in 1988 it allowed Arafat to speak remotely, something never done before for anyone and was never done after. It also recognized “Palestine” as an entity and not just the PLO as a representative of the people, all while Arafat was launching the first intifada, acknowledged by the UN a few months before.
While Arab countries rejected Arafat's militants for their violence, the UN not only empowered them but also gave them a platform. This ongoing UN support for violent groups like the PLO and Hamas highlights a pattern of prioritizing attacking Israel over the lives of innocent civilians, just like today. Rather than working to resolve conflicts and end violence, the UN fuels instability and perpetuated extremism.
The "United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine," which was created in December 1948, was created to facilitate the implementation of General Assembly Resolution 194, passed on December 11, 1948, as part of the same resolution.
The UNCCP is one of the lesser known UN bodies. The UNCCP's primary function is to assist the governments and authorities concerned to reach a final settlement of all outstanding questions between them (Israel and other countries). This is to be done through negotiations conducted either with the Conciliation Commission or directly between the parties, (Arab Countries and Israel). The commission has not done anything for about 60 years, but their mandate is still valid since it was created as part of Resolution 194, the same resolution that created the right of return.
Part of the mandate of the UNCCP is to RESETTLE people, all those who do not wish to return home. At the same time, the mandate is to make sure those responsible for the destruction and damages to the refugees, both Arab Palestinians and Jews are compensated. That would mean, the Arab countries involved in the war need to make sure Arab-Palestinians are compensated for their loss. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Yemen are responsible for starting wars. As Arab countries expelled the PLO and its terrorists, it has refused to work with UNCCP to either give citizenship and UNCCP has not done its job of resettlement, one that is part of its mandate
It’s time for the international community to recognize the detrimental role the UN has played in fostering terror and refocus efforts on true peace and reconciliation. It is time to find all the refugees in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, who wish to relocate a new home! UNCCP has the mandate to do it.
